“A delicious daydream of a book.” Elin Hilderbrand, New York Times bestselling author of 28 Summers“With lyrical writing and a page-turning plot, this sun-dappled book has it all: heart, smarts, and an irresistible musical beat.” —Karen Dukess, author of The Last Book PartyONE ICONIC FAMILY. ONE SUMMER OF SECRETS. THE DAZZLING SPIRIT OF 1970S CALIFORNIA.For Jackie Pierce, everything changed the summer of 1979, when she spent three months of infinite freedom at her bohemian uncle’s sprawling estate on the California coast. As musicians, artists, and free spirits gathered at The Sandcastle for the season in pursuit of inspiration and communal living, Jackie and her cousin Willa fell into a fast friendship, testing their limits along the rocky beach and in the wild woods... until the summer abruptly ended in tragedy, and Willa silently slipped away into the night.Twenty years later, Jackie unexpectedly inherits The Sandcastle and returns to the iconic estate for a short visit to ready it for sale. But she reluctantly extends her stay when she learns that, before her death, her estranged aunt had promised an up-and-coming producer he could record a tribute album to her late uncle at the property’s studio. As her musical guests bring the place to life again with their sun-drenched beach days and late-night bonfires, Jackie begins to notice startling parallels to that summer long ago. And when a piece of the past resurfaces and sparks new questions about Willa’s disappearance, Jackie must discover if the dark secret she’s kept ever since is even the truth at all.“An engrossing tale of secrets, memory, music, and the people and places you can never outrun. A fantastic summer read.”—Laura Dave, New York Times bestselling author of The Last Thing He Told Me“This book is gorgeous. A gold-drenched, nostalgic dream with a fierce female friendship at its heart.”—Marisa de los Santos, New York Times bestselling author of I'll Be Your Blue Sky

Book Lady Sunshine: A Novel Review :

Lady Sunshine is a beautifully written and well-paced novel. As I started reading this story-- which is set in one of my favorite places in the USA, Northern California and the San Francisco coast area--I became intrigued with the characters from both timelines. There is the 1999 timeline when we are introduced to the protagonist and the host of characters she becomes involved with when she returns to the musicians' compound that she first visited in 1979. In 1979, there was a largely different set of characters who were so well described through their actions and words that I could picture each one and feel their feelings.I found the timelines very well defined and easy to follow. The characters in both eras were intriguing and well-developed. At one point while I was reading Lady Sunshine, I thought that the story could have been told with fewer words and at a faster pace. Not that I wasn't intrigued, and the book certainly kept my interest; but as primarily a thriller reader, I am used to faster-paced novels. But then I developed a great appreciation for the pace of the book because the author had captured and embraced the momentum of those eras so perfectly. It was an relaxed read that took me back to a more leisurely time and put me in the perfect mindset for simply enjoying the beautiful writing. And as the eras collided, and a mystery unfolded, I found myself even more caught up in the cadence of the storytelling. As a thriller reader, I certainly got my reward with the unexpected twists that I didn't see coming. A wonderful book by a talented author. I'll look forward to reading more of Ms. Doan's books.
I was 13 the summer much of this book takes place, 1979, so perhaps that's why this story of two teen girls amidst the debauchery of a musical creative hideaway with a famous folk musician resonated so much with me. I loved the back and forth from the late 1990s to late 1970s as the narrator tries to put together the pieces of her long ago summer. If you liked the movie Almost Famous, you'll love this novel.
